Review canoeing hazards and how to anticipate, prevent, mitigate, and respond

Review first aid: blisters, cold-water shock, hypothermia, dehydration, heat, sprains

Discuss Safety Afloat and how it applies to canoeing

Successfully complete the Scouting America swimmer test

Name and point out the major parts of a canoe

Describe how canoe length and shape affect performance

Name and point out the parts of a paddle

Size a paddle for a sitting and a kneeling paddler

Review life jackets for canoeing and why one must always be worn

Select and properly fit the correct size life jacket

Review safety/rescue equipment: signal, spare paddle, bailer, ropes, throw bag

Review general care and maintenance of canoes, paddles, and equipment

Safely carry and launch the canoe from a dock or shore

Safely land the canoe and return it to storage

Demonstrate kneeling and sitting positions and their proper use

Change places while afloat

Exit in deep water keeping contact; reenter with partner's help without capsizing

Perform a controlled capsize; show a capsized canoe supports both paddlers

Swim/tow/push a swamped canoe 50 ft to shallows; empty and reenter it

In deep water, rescue a swamped canoe and paddlers; empty and help reenter

Perform a canoe rescue of a conscious swimmer

Throw a rescue bag within 3 ft of a swimmer 30 ft away; repack the bag

Pivot 180° right and return left using draws/pushaways or sweeps

Move sideways 10 ft and return using draw and pushaway strokes

Stop from forward motion within two boat lengths using backstroke

From stern, paddle straight 15-20 boat lengths with a steering stroke

Tandem straight line 15-20 boat lengths, stern using a steering stroke

Turn 90° in an arc right and left in 5-10 boat lengths while moving

Paddle backwards in a straight line 3-4 boat lengths

Complete a figure-8 course around markers 3-4 boat lengths apart
